Practicality

I have never been involved in one of these discussions yet, but I thought it was time to

start thinking...Disclaimer: I don’t know if I am doing this right....and all of this is in my

opinion....

As far as practicality goes in relation to my personal ethics and how it relates to my

spirituality, I suppose it kind of goes hand in hand. I just started reading the book “Before

you cast a spell” and he makes a point of saying that magic needs to be practical. This not

only means planning and having intention behind the spell, but it should be one you need.

Doreen Virtue points out that the primary difference between how angels and fae work

are that the angels have more to do with your spiritual growth and fae have to do with the

practical things in life.

Does this mean that as far as your magic or spiritual changes go you have to be firmly

rooted in “real” life? No. It doesn’t. What it means though, is that you need to have a

firm grasp on reality, how you can affect it and what changes you are MEANT to make.

For instance, is it practical to heal every illness? No. People need to die, they need to

strengthen their immune system, etc. Those cycles and needs were put into place so

people would change and grow, not just physically, but due to the emotional changes

illness brings with them.

Another part of practicality is whether it is necessary to make actions, cast spells or get

involved. Perhaps the solution will arrive or conclude without your help. Perhaps you

shouldn’t always get in the way of fate. Perhaps it will harm more than help by getting

involved. That is one of the reasons that it is difficult to make decisions and all the

ones you make have to be looked at from each angle. This doesn’t just refer to magical

changes as much as real, physical based changes and decisions.

This might mean that as far as being physically practical, you need to look at things

objectively. Ask yourself if you really need a cookie, if you really need to buy

ANOTHER stuffed unicorn, ask if you really need three copies of the same book. Now,

if you’re me, it might be practical having three copies of the same book (one for notes,

one personal, one coven). OK, maybe I am stretching it, but there are some times when it

is more practical to have it that way. Maybe its not owning something that you need to be

practical about, but your life decisions.

Perhaps it is more practical moving than living in the same place. Perhaps it is better

because you are closer to a job, or further from the bustle of the big city. Whatever it

is, there is usually a reason you are presented with the decision. Sometimes making

the decision is the life lesson. Either way, I think having both spiritual and mundane

practicality is necessary and augments certain parts of your life.
